TPOAC: Shotgun 14

When: Dec – Feb 2023

Where: Abbey College, Ramsey

With:

Bill Vines – Sound artist

Jack Wilkin – Youth worker & performance artist

Participants: 10 students

Shotgun-14 by TPOAC is part of Common Ground. Each track on the album was made by Ten Pupils of Abbey College (TPOAC) in Ramsey. They took inspiration from their school and their local heritage, and all the sounds were recorded in Abbey College and around the Abbey House and gardens.

The project was led by sound artist Bill Vine and co-facilitated by young artist Jack Wilkin who worked with 10 students over 4 sessions between December 22 and February 2023. They spent time getting to know the professional recording equipment, trying the kit out and working together to gather sounds in and around the school and the Abbey. They explored ideas around music, their local heritage and what listening really meant to them.

The full album is hosted on Bill’s album Ryoanji Records, A new label for experimental and electroacoustic music. Founded 2021.

The final listening party was a chance for 20 other students to experience the full album- The 10 students, who made the work, decided on the look and feel of the ‘party’. The audience listened to the album in 2 parts and got a chance to draw their own sound scores whilst listening to the tracks and feedback on what they felt about the music.

The drawings on the front cover of the album are from the 10 students who took part in the project and are sound scores drawn whilst listening to music.
